The spot

Le Morne, the Indian Ocean's benchmark kitesurf spot

Le Morne is a shallow lagoon protected by a coral reef, forming flat water that's rare at this scale. That's what makes it as sought-after by beginners as by advanced riders.

The lagoon and the reef

Depth ranges from 50cm to 1.5m depending on the tide.

The reef shelters the lagoon from swell and forms waves further out, reserved for experienced riders.

At low tide, coral becomes exposed just centimeters under the surface — a real hazard for feet and equipment.

At high tide, the water gets deeper and currents strengthen.

The map places the peninsula, La Gaulette and the main access routes. It does not replace the briefing: the riding zone and meeting point vary with wind, tide and programme.

Precautions

Wear protective reef shoes against coral and sea urchins.

Stonefish are rare but present on this type of seabed — one more reason not to walk barefoot.

The spot can get crowded in peak season — an instructor helps pick the right time slot and zone.
